Complete Login & Setup Guide for ZTE ZXHN H298A
How to Access the ZTE H298A Admin Panel
The ZTE ZXHN H298A is a dual-band AC1200 home gateway router commonly deployed by telecom ISPs. Access its web interface as follows:
- Connect to the Router: Use an Ethernet cable from your PC to any LAN port on the H298A, or connect wirelessly to the default SSID and password printed on the device's rear label.
- Open a Web Browser: Enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and press Enter.
- Enter Login Credentials: Use the default username admin and password admin. If these fail, check the label for an ISP-assigned custom password. Some deployments use: admin/admin123, admin/password, or the last 6 digits of the device serial number.
- Select Your Language: The H298A interface supports multiple languages. Select your preferred language from the settings dropdown.

WLAN Configuration — 2.4GHz and 5GHz
- After logging in, click the Local Network tab in the top navigation menu.
- In the left panel, expand WLAN and select WLAN Basic or WLAN SSID Configuration.
- Configure the 2.4GHz network (SSID 1):
- SSID Name: Enter your desired network name.
- Security Type: Select
WPA2-PSK-AES.
- WPA Passphrase: Enter a strong password (minimum 12 characters).

- Security Type: WPA2-PSK-AES.
- Enter a strong password.
- Click Apply to save changes to both bands.
Advanced Wireless Optimization
Channel Width: For 2.4GHz, enable 20/40MHz coexistence for compatibility with legacy IoT devices. For 5GHz, set to 80MHz for maximum throughput on modern devices.Channel Selection: Set both bands to Auto to allow the router to dynamically select the least congested channel. You can also manually select channels: 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4GHz; 36, 40, 44, or 149 for 5GHz.Transmission Power: Set to Maximum for full coverage area.Band Steering: If available under Advanced WLAN settings, enable Band Steering so dual-band capable clients are pushed to the faster 5GHz band.Guest Network Setup
- Navigate to WLAN > Guest Network or WLAN SSID Configuration and look for SSID 2 (guest profile).
- Enable the guest SSID.
- Set a unique SSID name (e.g., HomeGuest).
- Set security to WPA2-PSK-AES with a separate password.
- Ensure Internet Access Only is enabled and guest-to-LAN routing is disabled.
Firmware Update Procedure
Like many ISP-deployed routers, the ZTE H298A firmware is typically managed via
TR-069 by your ISP:
- Check if a manual update option exists under System > Firmware Update or Maintenance > Upgrade.
- If available, visit ZTE's official support website, download the firmware package for ZXHN H298A, and upload it via the manual upgrade interface.
- If no manual option exists, contact your ISP to request a firmware update push.
- Warning: Never upload firmware from unofficial sources — corrupted firmware can brick the device.
Security Hardening Checklist
- Change Admin Password: Navigate to Maintenance > Account (or System > User Management). Change the admin password from the default.
- Disable WPS: Go to WLAN > WLAN Basic and set WPS to Disabled. WPS PIN attacks are a documented vulnerability.
- Enable WPA2/WPA3 Encryption: Ensure all SSIDs use WPA2-PSK-AES or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode.
- Disable Remote Management: Check under Internet > Remote Management and ensure this is turned off.
- DHCP Static Reservations: Assign fixed local IPs to critical devices (servers, printers, gaming consoles) for easier port forwarding management.
Port Forwarding on ZTE H298A
- Assign a static IP to your target device via Local Network > DHCP Server > Static DHCP (bind MAC to fixed IP).
- Navigate to Internet > Port Forwarding (or NAT > Port Mapping).
- Click New Entry or Add Rule:
-
WAN Connection: Select your active internet connection profile.
-
Protocol: TCP, UDP, or Both.
-
