Learn how to access your Netgear Nighthawk or Orbi router admin panel. Find default credentials, IP gateways, step-by-step connection flow, and detailed troubleshooting solutions to secure your network.
Managing a Netgear router requires connecting to its web-based admin interface. Historically, users typed raw gateway IP addresses, but Netgear simplifies this with the hostname routerlogin.net or its sibling routerlogin.com. These local hostnames resolve to the router's IP, usually 192.168.1.1.
For more details on router configurations, check our Router Login Guide and read our directory of Router Login Hostnames.
Netgear routers ship with preconfigured credentials. On older models, the default username is admin and the password is password. Newer Nighthawk and Orbi models have unique, randomly generated passwords printed on a barcode label sticker located on the bottom or back of the physical router.
If you have changed the password and forgotten it, or if the default credentials are not accepted, you must restore the router to its factory defaults. For instructions on resetting, see our Router Reset Guide or check our list of manufacturer defaults in our Router Password Guide.
Once logged into the Netgear admin dashboard, you can configure several important parameters:
If you are using Netgear Orbi mesh systems, you can also manage parameters through the web dashboard, but many users prefer mobile configurations. Review the general concepts of mesh routing in our Mesh WiFi Guide or see how to deploy them in Mesh WiFi Setup Guide.
If you cannot access the Netgear admin console, check if a VPN is active or if your browser is using DNS-over-HTTPS. Disabling these options will restore local DNS queries. If issues persist, refer to our troubleshooting guides: Router Login Not Working and TP-Link Router Login Guide for comparative troubleshooting.
For advanced features like NAT rules, port forwarding, or port checking, see our Port Forwarding Guide and test your ports. You can also view your external parameters using our What Is My IP Tool.
For profiles of other hardware, you can browse all brands under our general Router Brands Directory, or check brand-specific profiles such as the Netgear Routers Guide, ASUS Routers Guide, or tplinkwifi.net Guide.
To maintain security across all devices, follow the best practices in Wi-Fi Security to audit connected devices on your network.
Connect your PC, smartphone, or laptop to the Netgear router's primary network via Wi-Fi or a physical Ethernet cable plugged into a LAN port. Avoid guest networks or public hotspots.
Turn off any active VPN client, proxy settings, or browser-based DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH). Ensure your network adapter is configured to obtain DNS servers automatically.
Open an incognito browser window, type http://routerlogin.net exactly in the address bar (not the search bar), and press Enter.
Input username 'admin' and password 'password' (or the custom password printed on your router's bottom label). Click Sign In to open the admin panel.
Connect to the Netgear WiFi network, open a web browser, type http://routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, and enter admin as the username and password (or the label password) as the credentials.
Most Netgear routers use 192.168.1.1. Some older models and Wi-Fi extenders use 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.250. Type these directly in your browser's URL address bar.
Press and hold the physical Reset button on the back of the router for 7-10 seconds using a paperclip. This restores factory defaults, including the default admin password.
Log into the admin panel at http://routerlogin.net, navigate to Basic > Wireless settings, find the Security Options section, and enter your new password in the Network Key field. Click Apply.
